Mariel Hemingway BIOGRAPHY
Already granted a fair measure of notoriety because of her famous grandfather (author Ernest Hemingway), the squeaky-voiced Mariel made her film debut at 14 along with older sister Margaux in the distasteful box-office flop Lipstick (1976). She got plenty of publicity for the preceding films, but stardom resolutely avoided her, and meaningless vehicles such as Creator and The Mean Season (both 1985) did little to promote her. She fared little better in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), and had no more luck in escaping the debacle of Sunset (1988) than did stars Bruce Willis and James Garner. The appallingly stupid Delirious (1991), which costarred Hemingway with John Candy, finally drove her to the small screen, where she starred in the prime-time dramatic series "Civil Wars" in 1991-92. She had earlier married restaurateur Stephen Crismant; together they produced The Suicide Club (1987, in which Mariel starred) and planned to make Across the River and Into the Trees (based on grandpa Hemingway's novel). They also own a string of restaurants. In a controversial and highly publicized guest shot on TV's "Roseanne" in 1994 she and Roseanne shared a kiss.
